Ifill the magazine to the brim, forcing it back into my pants with a huff as Darcy stands behind me, watching my every move to make sure I haven’t missed loading any of the guns splayed out on the table.

“Are you going to help?” I ask, eyeing her.

“No, I think you’re doing a good enough job.” She nods to Asher. “But I think he might need some help.”

I turn to Asher, struggling to fit some of the bullet packets into a duffel, and he gives Darcy a look of frustration. “Well, if you want to do it, be my guest.”

The bag slams to the ground as he storms out of the room, the tension in the air almost tangible as we all prepare for the war to come. Call it intuition, but I just know somewhere along the line that something is just not going to go the way I want it to because it never does, and Darcy, being the stubborn woman that I love her to be, won’t listen to me. So, I’m forced to take her with us.

“I need you to reconsider, Darcy,” I implore her, pulling her to me, and she looks up into my eyes, her emeralds not backing down, not that I expected her to.

“No,” she says calmly, placing her hands on either side of my face. “I’m not leaving you.”

“If you get hurt, I swear to God…”

“You don’t believe in God,” she retorts, pressing her body into mine, making me lose my breath yet again.

“No, because he’s a selfish bastard.” I give her a half smile, and she presses her soft lips gently onto mine. “This is the last time I’ll ask, even if I know your answer.”

“You need all the manpower you can get.”

“We will have more than enough,” I reassure her, but she shakes her head. “Darcy.” I pause, watching her intently. “The Dixons are in Italy.”

Her body tenses in my arms, her eyes darting away from me when she steps back. “I think this is a bad idea.” Her voice shakes as she fidgets with her hair, suddenly wary.

“Why?” Confused, I watch her for an answer, even if she doesn’t give it to me verbally, she almost always shows me how she truly feels with her body.

“It’s a trap.” Grabbing my hands, she squeezes. “Nicholas, please listen to me. Don’t. It’s a trap.”

“What do you know that I don’t?”

“Think about it! Why would the Dixons come here after they just lured Ezra back to London?” she questions, and I pause.

“This is what I’ve been trying to warn you about,” Asher chimes in, strolling back into the room. “And how do you know so much about the Dixons, Darcy?”

There’s no mistaking the accusatory tone in Asher’s voice, and I know he doesn’t trust her, but he doesn’t know her like I do, and I know things had to have changed after the nights we’ve spent in each other’s beds.

“Stop it, Asher,” I warn.

“Have you not once asked yourself who she spoke
